job market offers

Job Search Showdown The modern job market offers job seekers a multitude of options when it comes to finding a new position. Online, you’ll find an ever-evolving list of websites, networks, online groups, and tools at our disposal. It can be a bit much.

Two long-term resources go back to the beginning of the internet, and aren’t going anywhere soon: job boards and company websites. They both offer, at least on the surface, straightforward routes to both apply for jobs and make the case for hiring you.

But which is better?

To settle the Job Boards vs. Company Website debate, we’ll look at how they perform against each other in three categories (Efficiency, Information, and Networking).  Whichever proves supreme, in at least two out of three, will win the Job Search Showdown!

EFFICIENCY

Job searching is a time-consuming activity. It takes a focused effort to line up positions of interest. You have to make sure your search yields a decent number of results, or you won’t have much to show for the time you spent on it.

Job boards have the advantage here. They collect a range of positions, and employers, in one place. The best ones have good search tools, to find the balance between amount and accuracy.

The winner: JOB BOARDS

IINFORMATION

Information is key when submitting your resume. You need to make sure:

  • You’re spending time in the right positions
  • The company’s goals/direction lines up with yours
  • You’re not missing anything that would help you get the job

The descriptions you’re reading are up-to-date with the company’s current needs

A job board can supply much of this info, but if you want a deep-dive, it’s better to visit the company site. There, you can find out more about the company’s products, customers, work culture, and latest news.

This can be helpful when pitching yourself as a prospective employee. It can also let you know if it’s not the right company for you, sparing you wasted time and energy.

Also, there are companies who don’t put all their openings on job boards. If you’re interested in a specific employer, go to their website.  You might find opportunities they’ve only posted there.

The winner: COMPANY WEBSITES

NETWORKING

No modern job search is complete without networking. Professional relationships open doors you wouldn’t discover otherwise.

Company websites offer significant information about the company, but not much about the people in it. Job boards don’t have much more, but they’re a better launching-off point.

Networking takes time, and boards collect multiple leads in one place. From there, you can use resources, such as LinkedIn. The next step is to figure out who you may know there, and if people you know have connections.  This will allow you to reach out to decision-makers.

Job boards also have postings by specialized recruiters. Using the same methods, you can connect with the best headhunters in your field.

THE BIG WINNER: JOB BOARDS

It was competitive, but Job Boards came out on top. That said, job searching isn’t a “one solution fits all” kind of effort. Effective job searches leverage the best aspects of all the resources available to you.

Make sure HiringArc is one of those. It features a wide range of professional positions in multiple industries. You can also use it to connect with career specialists in your field. Make it the homepage for your search!
